I love this game, but the crashing in combination with the checkpoint save system made me lose a lot of progress in both story and online mode.

If you have any further ideas on now to fix this, or on where to best report this to Valve/NVIDIA, feel free to leave a comment. For now I'm just happy I'm able to play for longer than 20 minutes. This crash might be unrelated to #1, but I can't be sure as I haven't had the time to properly diagnose it. With #1 not an issue after restarting the computer before running RDR2, after about 2h45m the game just crashes to desktop.

Unfortunately installing a driver so old is not a really solution for us linux users, as a lot of things have been fixed in the meantime.Ĭrash #2: Crash to desktop after some time Install May's Nvidia certified driver, which for my 2080 TI is 446.14

I found another reddit Post with an interesting tidbit of information: Somewhere in the last few months there was a driver update that interfered with the way certain high memory games interact with the V memory and overloaded it causing GFX errors within 10minutes or exits to desktop with no error, so by installing the initial/oldest driver Red Dead 2 can run on, it eliminates that error. This setting has been hidden by Rockstar for a reason though. Also: Setting the hidden option asyncComputeEnabled in the system.xml file seems to provoke this crash too, even after reboot. I could provoke the game to crash every few minutes after start when doing GPU heavy calculations beforehand, e.g. I guess this might be related to VRAM handling, but I'm just guessing. After several days I can now report with high confidence that this does indeed avoid this specific crash (until #2 occurs). Until I just rebooted the computer before playing the game. Nothing and I mean absolutely nothing did work. I think that they either had a different problem than me or didn't play the game long enough for the crash to occur. Some people reported on ProtonDB that one or more of the above solutions did work for them.

There is a lot of information out there how to fix this error, but some might never work as the cause of the crash might be totally different. I wish the error message would be more specific. This error seems to be generic in nature (as you can guess by its name) and therefore can be caused by a variety of things.

But first my hardware and software configuration: I have been playing RDR2 for a long time now via Proton (>400h) and noticed 2 different crashes that are still an issue. I just registered on reddit to post this, maybe that's why? Anyway: For whatever reason, my previous post has been removed.
